Rolling Stone is an American biweekly magazine that focuses on popular culture, music and politics.

I had the opportunity to work at the Rolling Stone New York office with art director Mark Maltais, senior editors and writers to do the following:

  • Creating multiple layout options for pages and spreads for the print magazine

  • Researched photograph expenses for copyright purposes

  • Production preparation (pre-press)

  • Designed typographically conceptual ideas for featured stories with Art Directors

  • Adjusted template designs depending on story and category Pitching "hot gossip" for Random Notes

Special Edition Books focus on a group of people or person and is consolidated with all articles about them by Rolling Stone throughout the years in a more book form tone but at the same time has a Rolling Stone look and feel.

In terms of design, these books offer more creativity and out of the box designs reflecting whom or what the edition is about. In this case, we all know that SNL is about making people laugh and fun! So, we brainstormed a more asymmetrical layout for the section openers to compliment the goofiness of SNL that we all love verses a more Rolling Stone discipline design! Photographs were chosen amongst hundreds to create a more balanced visual that helped support the copy. It was very tricky creating precise paragraph styles for this edition.

I had the opportunity to work with art directors and creative team on the Barack Obama Special Edition. I had to narrow down photography choices from over 2,000 photographs that worked with each chapter. I also helped create the typographical layouts for a chapter along with choosing imagery.
